    Riddle me this

helo peeps, anyone got a good riddle to solve post it here Let me start you off with this:

A king wants to hire a royal adviser, so he invites his kingdom's three wisest men to engage in a contest of wits. He sits them down facing one another and walks behind them, putting a cap on each man's head. He tells them that he has given each of them a red cap or a white cap; in fact, he has placed red caps on all three heads. No one can see what he himself is wearing; there are no mirrors or other ways to cheat. The king says, "Raise your hand if you see someone wearing a red hat." All three men raise their hands. Then the king says, "All right, now, if you know what color your cap is, stand up."

For several minutes, no one moves. Then wise man No. 3 stands up. "I am wearing a red cap!" he proclaims. How did he know?

Is it because he saw the caps when the king walked behind the other men?

(Except I don't really like that answer, must give it more thought)

Because if the other two, and him, boh saw two people wearing red hats, he has to be wearing one. I don't know if this makes sense.

Hmmm... long shot but was it a lucky guess as he had no way of knowing?

almost there Farror but not quite(I think) however when one guy raises his hand it means he could see at least one red hat, not necessarily two. So if one of em sees both others with a raised hand, then they could just be signalling that each others got a red hat on. This alone (hint) is not the answer

ANSWER: Wise man No. 3 first imagined himself wearing a white cap. "If I have a white cap," he reasoned, "then when wise man No. 2 raised his hand he must have been looking at wise man No. 1's red cap. Wise man No. 1, being smart, would have realized immediately that the red cap seen by No. 2 had to be his, and he would have stood up. Wise man No. 2 would have reached the same conclusion and he would have stood up quickly as well. Since neither of the others stood up, I must not be wearing a white cap. I must be wearing a red one."

    anyone got another?

But they were sat down facing eachother, not in a line, and besides, who says 1 was looking at 2 or 2 at 1 initially? That makes no sense and it's taking a clue from how the others to indicate they are wearing a red hat... you suck *sulks*

I think he/she was joking. Good riddle, even though I don't get it.

It's a very good riddle! You just have to reason it out, based on a beginning hypothesis. I think that was clever.

I have one. Imagine there are ten volumes on a shelf each with one hundred leaves/pages (covers included). If a bookworm starts eating its way from the first page of the first book to the last page of the last book, how many leaves/pages would he have eaten through?

Purely mathematical? In a way, yes.

It's 0. It could also be 200. If it is assumed that the books are stacked binding outwards then it is 0. If they are stacked binding inwards then it is 200.
