Thread: What would you spend it on?

Had an interesting in class assignment today in History. Our teacher said that we were ahead (somehow?) of his other classes. We had been talking about political terms, and what they meant, because pundits tended to through them around quite a bit, Communism (far left) through Nazism (far right).

He gave us a little project to do so he could see where we stood. The scenario is we were in charge of a small, fictional country, and had $3 billion to spend. What reforms would we do, how would we manage out military, what kind of foreign relations would we do etc. I found it pretty interesting, and ended up being Socialist with interventionist tendencies. (I had done subversive things to create reasons to invade my slightly-better-off neighbor).

So, if you were in charge of a small country of 500,000 people (can be landlocked or not, your choice) and had $3 billion to spend as your budget, what would you do? I'll post what I did in a bit after dinner.

I would do what all dictators in receipt of aid would do; I would put $2.5 billion into my Swiss bank account, pay off the generals with the rest, go cap in hand to the IMF and claim poverty....

Funnily enough, that is almost precisely the situation I now find myself in - except I'm not in charge but I do have a good handle on the problems this country of 400k, with billions of oil income, faces.

Interesting concept - I think this deserves more study. Thanks.
