Question about Audio Books

I've been working on a very detailed book that requires some extensive formatting for a print-on-demand publisher, and is taking way longer than I would like. Would it be easier to just do an audio book instead? What are the requirements for that? Will I still need to obtain an ISBN number? Will I be able to leave out certain things like the index and end notes? What are the differences in the publishing process of an audio book as compared to the printed version? I'll have to do a little more research on it, but any advice or help will be appreciated. I guess I should actually listen to an audio book too (that may answer some of my questions)! Anyway, thanks for any help.

It's too complex to publish but you want to RECORD a SPOKEN VERSION of it????????

Why not just publish it as an ebook? Free, include all your want, and it'll take about 10 minutes.

You only need an ISBN if you plan on marketing it in ways that require an ISBN, like amazon

Write your book first, then if people actually think it's good than make the audio book.

Is your book fiction or non-fiction? What is making the layout complicated? Could it be simplified? I agree that I don't know if your problem would be solved simply by switching formats.

That said, I am aware of one company that specifically does audiobooks, http://audiobookman.com These are basically done much like a recording studio would do a CD. There are also plenty of info-marketers that record their own MP3/CDs with just decent home recording equipment. All depends on what your audience would be happy with.

Hope that helps.
