Sometimes I need music to help me feel the atmosphere I am trying to create but other days I am like you, it distracts, especially if I like the song. Although I am much more productive in an office environment with others working around me, so some noise is okay, but music is not most of the time.

It varies with what I'm writing. My music must synch up with the emotions I am attempting to evoke. I must feel them as I write them. If I'm trying to be funny, turn up "They Might Be Giants," Tragic, something on the side of "Your Sweet Uncertainty."

Sometimes I'll find myself mixing emotions with scenes because of the music I have playing. It'll be a happy occasion and suddenly I'll realize I've made it melancholy.

Yes, I almost always have music playing while I'm writing. I'm extremely inspired by music. I write as if I was watching it unfold before me like a scene in a movie, in romantic moments, I like a romantic soundtrack, sad moments a touching one, etc etc. It depends a lot on whats going on in my story what type of music I put on.

For example, there is a song I love love love called "flaming june" which always makes me think of things like intense summer love, passion, beauty of the world, etc. I play that a lot when trying to feel the love between the characters in my book.

If I'm not having a particular mood at the moment I usually just put a long, progressive techno song on fairly low volume. Trance/techno always gets my mind moving.
