What the hell is a "popular editor"? It's like "beloved dictator".

My guess would be if TT showed something here it's something he copied from somewhere. It's pretty obvious from his posts and signatures that he can't write at even an average level.

Wow this thread is horribly depressing. As I read over the list of "you suck and here's why" I started thinking about the YA novel that I just finished. How do I know if it's any good? Is it even worth submitting? I'm ticked that this list somehow "got to me" but it kinda did. I think it's preying upon my own insecurities as a writer but I am curious what you all think... How do you know the difference between false praise and the truth? How do you KNOW if your novel is "interesting" enough to an audience?

If there's one thing I've learned through writing, reading and critiquing, is that everyone has varying opinions. *sigh* Now I'm going to go narrate my own literary suicide.

But not really.

Reminds me of one of my old teachers. "People in the school like to pretend that this is a democracy; when you get a job, people there will do it too. It's not; it's not even a monarchy. It's a dictatorship, and I'm your dictator in this classroom. You have no rights in here. So work."

Hum! I just realized why people write things like this. They make money off of people who get their feelings hurt when the publisher tells them their book sucks. They go to the most intelligent person they can think of to comfort them.... an author of a book that they have never met before in their life.
The number one reason why you aren't a writer is because you read self-help books all day. Do good writers honestly need someone else telling them how to write?

I'd have to go along with that, Mike. Sending promised checks helps the approval polls, as well.

Mi, I agree completely. You even manage to put it more more mean-spirited than usually do, which is quite an accomplishment. Have yourself checked.

I've never read any self help books. They all just seem like a massive con to me, no matter what the subject. Pluss the people that write them are usually fairly obvious parasites.

When I was in high school, I read the "Marshall Plan for Novel Writing" and thought it was my ticket to fame and fortune. Last month, 8 years after reading it the first time, I skimmed through it and realized how awful it would be if every book followed this cut-and-dry formula the author forces upon you in the book.

Those types of books are scams in the same sense that those "no money down" house-selling starter kits are scams. The product peddler claims to be an expert who wants to share his knowledge -- for a price. Why isn't he busy selling all these incredibly cheap houses?

.... says the guy who's trying to push a relationship-advice book these days. Well, at least I'm not telling people how to live and work.

Haha! Just to a hard exam. The stress is making me jerky... er.
Ps: love the new avi, Lin.

I read one once when I was first trying to be a writer. Ugh. That was when I was 13. I read it front to cover. I tried to apply it to my writing, but guess what? I never wrote a thing. Then I realized what bull crap it was. Now I back on the good old path of writing my book how I want it to be written and not how some stupid no-name author says I should.

I love reading this kind of book and applying it to my wiritng, it brings about such...

Okay, I do love to read books on writing, but for fun, not because I seriously think they'll really help me be a better writer.
