are chapter titles too babyish to bother with?

should time spent pondering over titles cease because people will look at something with chapter titles and think 'gay'?

i hadn't really thought about it, so what is everyone else's view on it?

personally, i think they're good for finding a specific portion of the book you want to read again for the sake of it. y'know?
blah.

I love chapter titles. They give an insight into what the chapter is going to be about, and they're cool. Who said they were gay? Unless I'm going to have a novel with about seventy or eight short chapters (where coming up with a name for each would be tedious) I usually use chapter names.

Sam.

I don't think there's anything wrong with chapter titles. If they benefit the story, use them, if not, don't. It's just whatever work best.

When I tell myself "at the end of this chapter, I'm done for the night", the title of the next chapter is usually what drags me into the wee hours of the morning reading. It excites me to ponder about why a certain chapter was given its title, and I'm relieved when I figure it out.

They tease me. I cannot resist.

I don't think they really harm anyone who doesn't care for them positively, so I'd say to go for it unless it's a hassle.

There is nothing "babyish" about titles. They are essentially an effect, a style element. If they fit the work and you handle them well, they're good. If not, they aren't.

I would say it's something used mostly for humor these days.
One of my favorites is in Jimmy Buffett's "Joe Merchant" -- "You Can't Hide Your Mayan Eyes"

Yes. Stop worrying about chapter titles.

Worry about your stories, and how you're going to convey the best possible tale.

King does chapter titles. You don't want to end up like King do you?

God no, who would want to end up rich and world-famous and writing full time for a living?

Better to end up as a non-writer pretending to be one on websites and spouting ridiculous, baseless bullshit.

I like chapter titles too. Depending on the story of course. But I don't get why they would be babyish. Like anything else about writing, if they are good cool, if not, lame.

To be honest I don't really think about what effect chapter titles have on the reader. I give my chapters titles so I find it easier to remember what happening in each chapter so I don't have to read the full thing to make sure I had one fact right in the new part I'm writing. But in books I buy I kind of look at chapter titles as an extra. They aren't necessary but they are nice ^.^

Yes, chapter titles make me stop and think about a man shoving his dick up another man's ass. You obviously have such a wonderful, mature grasp on the English language that you really should sit around and spend time contemplating important things like whether or not to title your, I'm assuming, brilliant chapters. Wouldn't want your work to come off as "babyish," would you?

I was about to post pretty much the same sarcastic post.

On a serious note - Tonnes of the best writers name their chapters. But it's something I would leave till last.

Do people's brains work properly anymore? Who looks at a chapter title and thinks "gay?" I mean, come on! That's seriously naive. So do you look at a particular word and think "shit, that's gay, can't use it?"

As Lin said, chapter titles, if used correctly, work very well.

And yet again, TT goes off on a rant about King. Seriously, TT, you need to start reading someone other than King.

Sam.

TT, to equate chapter titles with King and bad writing is pretty ridiculous. There's a lot of amazing writers who use chapter titles, I would name some examples but I don't see a point, if you read anything other than King (who you seem to hate) then you might be able to name a few examples of good writing with chapter titles yourself. . .
