Margaret Forster, who I mentioned earlier, threw out her computer because she feels that using pen and paper makes her think carefully about every word - there's no cutting and pasting, no easy deletion... she feels the lack of technology makes her a better writer. I think Self feels similarly about his typewriter - if making a mistake means retyping a whole page, better to get it right first time.

Each to their own - I enjoy writing with pen and paper on occasion, but it can't compare with my laptop. I have a 1954 Oliver portable typewriter also, but I'd rather shut my testicles in a door than write anything of any length on it.

Nacreous, OP is Original Poster - in this case, you. And don't worry too much about starting arguments. I've known them to rage for days over something as simple as the care and feeding of semi-colons. Life's too short to argue, but it's too short to have to mind your words too much also.

If nothing else, this thread has made me think about how easy we have it. You have to respect writers who weren't able cut and paste, save multiple versions, edit with ease, and print out pristine documents.

Amen. Whenever I bitch about writing using WP programs and internet, etc. I remember not only my days writing on deadline with typewriters...and then that Shakespeare wrote everything with a bird feather dipped in ink!!!!!!!!!!!...and feel llike a punk.

(Doesn't mean I quit whining, just that I feel guilty about it)

Respect and admire. Apparently Dickens always submitted his (hand-written) manuscripts to such a high standard that his publishers didn't bother proof-reading, just sent them straight to the typesetters. Nowadays, even with spell-check and all the bells and whistles, who doesn't let a few mistakes through the net?

Off topic... does anyone know the gaping plot hole in Great Expectations? (no points awarded to anyone sneaking a peek at google!)

Just a wild guess - would it be anything to do with Miss Haversham's breakfast?
