Publication is impossible.
Just because I like exploding the above myth (and because I'm a shameless namedropper), may I cite my latest client - Tish Cohen.

In September 2005, before she’d even found a publisher, the 40-year-old mother of two from the Toronto exurb of Richmond Hill sold her first novel, Town House, to Fox Studios. Director Ridley Scott (Alien, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator) has been brought on to produce and Quills screenwriter Doug Wright is adapting the book for the screen.

Thanks, Mike, a great link to a fantastic story. A bit like Martina Cole's, especially the link to unashamedly chasing commercial success, without bothering about 'literariness', the stumbling block for many writers.

Far OUT!!! IT doesn't get any better than that.
Way cool. Let me guess: you taught her all she knows, but are too darn modest to admit it?

Ridley Scott is about as cool as it gets. And I wish I could take some credit, but by some remarkable stroke of luck she managed to achieve this without my intervention!

There are loads of them. I looked back over some old Backspace (writers group) newsletters.
January - 8 members had novels released.
February - another 8 releases.
March - 10 releases.
None of these are self-published.

Mike, I just peeked through Backspace. What is it, exactly? A writing collective? Lots of sales, that's for sure. Wonder what kind of member publications we have going on here at WF (rhetorical)...

The late bloomer has few regrets about not pursuing a career as a writer earlier in her life, though Cohen says she might have felt less conflicted about success in her 20s. “But I think I would have gotten into a lot of trouble. I was a little too wild when I was younger. I had always thought I was meant to write. I’m just glad I finally did.”
arrhh, there's hope for me yet *nod nod* thanks for the inspiration

There's hope for all of us.
Backspace is not so different from WF except it costs to belong, the attitude of members is way more professional and it's way more focussed on publication. The membership is much smaller but the knowlege base is bigger, as it has a larger proportion of published members, several of them best-sellers. There are also a couple of agents who are members.
One excellent thing they do is run member Q&A sessions with invited guests; looking at recent months there have been several agents (including one specialising in movie rights), an associate editor for a publishing house, a couple of publicists and a book reviewer. They all help give insights into the nuts and bolts of the industry.
Backspace also runs the now-famous Backspace Conference in NY every year - Backspace Writers Conference - Home

As a fellow fortysomething, I appreciate seeing this. Thanks for this, Mike...and congrats to your client Tish!
