Is there such a thing as a "timeline novel"

I was just curious if there was the naming for a specific type of novel. The type of novel I'm talking about is when the story covers a large portion of history over a large period of time with no set main character, but rather focusing on the turn of events caused by previous things.

for example; a novel where the main focus is about a group of ancient gods sending down a tablet of laws, and seeing where civilization goes based on those laws, where there are different characters in every section and every section is a different time.

is there an actual classification or name for this type of novel? (and i know some people will argue that a novel with no main character isn't really a novel at all.) but im just curious

thanks in advance for the answers!

I don't think there's such thing as a "Timeline Novel", but what you're describing could definitely fit into a different type if you're looking to classify it.

Here's a link to a list of different types of novel:

Types of Novel

If I had to guess or pick a few types that your story might fit, I'd go with:

Historical, epic, or maybe even dystopian if the civilization you're writing about is not doing well.

Hope the list of novel types helps!
