In my novel I have a civilization that practices festivals according to the moon phases. While not unique, it varies from Earth because my planet has two moons (which again isn't unique). So there are festivals when both are full, or one is nearly full and the other is half, etc. etc.
Also, my two main protagonists have a discussion about destiny and purpose within their world. A mere mention of simply the "Almighty" fit nicely in the dialog when each character came to the question "do you believe there is something out there?". My hope is that it relates people to the God of the Bible with just a name. It doesn't have to go into detail to be familiar.
My antagonist places all of his faith in his knowledge and books. You could say the history of the planet is his "religion".
So I have tried to relate the religious aspect of my fantasy world to the real world. You're going to have a different belief everywhere you turn on Earth. Why not make your fantasy world follow step? It can be an age old idea but have a fresh new spin.
But I do agree with Destroyer. If there is nothing to believe in, there is no hope in life. This makes it very difficult to keep on living. Who wants to live their life without something to put their faith in? If there was nothing to live for we'd probably just follow the lemmings off of a cliff.
Not to mention religion can very firmly plant moral laws, ethics and decency into your world. It helps to establish right from wrong. Human struggles get very boring if everything you do is ok, and you can't do any wrong. That would make the bad guy a good guy along with everyone else in your world.
Short answer: religion/belief system in fantasy is good (and like others have mentioned, it doesn't have to be a complete understanding of the religion/beliefs either)
