When submitting for publishing.
First off, sorry if this thread has been posted before. Delete if necessary.
We've all heard the cardinal rules of submitting your work to publishers: make sure your work is double-spaced, with line spacing at 2, and font size twelve in Times New Roman. Do these have to be completely obeyed, or is there any leniency afforded?
Thanks.
Sam.

If they say to do something, do it. If they don't, use a standard font (though I'd still say TR). Use sans serif if you want to open an envelope filled with anthrax. The double spacing bit is non-negotiable. They'll trash it without reading a word. When you've got a pile higher than Val Kilmer's current body fat percentage, your eyes will explode with anything less. Not to mention you'll be looking for any reason to throw something away.

It's all academic, because they'll just return it with a cheerful "Sorry - not right for my list" anyway.
I mean, you don't think they really READ submissions . . . . do you . . . .?

There is some leeway, if you submit in a different serif font (a lot of the courier fonts are popular) and your margins aren't quite right, but the first page grabs them, they won't care too much, but submit in comic sans... they'll laugh all the way to the trashcan.
But seriously, who needs leeway? If their guidelines ask for something a particular way, do it. Don't put obstacles in your way.
