Critiquing Your Favourite Authors

Does anyone else read published novels critically as an exercise? The weight of an author's back-catalog and name can close down the critical faculties. I often wondered what reaction I would get if I posted a relatively unknown passage of a top author in the critique and advice section anonymously. Incidentally, I don't do that by the way. I am sure that some people would suggest changes that were not needed. Basics aside, it is difficult to critique a chapter in isolation without knowing what else has gone on.

That would be fun to do.

Can you post someone up?

And then, after we rip him apart, please tell us the name and author of the book.

If the postings didn't break any rules, I think it would be interesting to see how many educated and honest critiques were received concerning the authors work.

*It probably would break some sort of copyright laws though, wouldn't it?

Someone's done it before with a poem, and they were given a ban, at least for a while.

There are plenty of books in the public domain, including most of the classics. Google the Gutenberg Project.

Copyright issues aside, it's been done before and achieves nothing.

Really.

And there's this. If they are your favorites....what's to critique?

Indeed - it's hard to read your own, or others, favourites objectively. I will wax lyrical about my favourites, someone else will shoot them down and tear them to pieces because they don't like them.

If we all liked the same things, publishers would only have to publish 10 books a year.

The idea of posting parts was only meant as an aside. It was more a question of asking how critique is validated. If a piece by a published author known more widely as good work can be shot down that must raise some issues.

Not really. Just because something's widely known as being 'good work' doesn't mean it has to be universally liked or appreciated. Look for discussions ok Stephen King or Harry Potter for example; some people will hold them up as paragons of good writing, others will dismiss them as tripe.
