You're either really young, or really naive. Don't you watch the Maury show?

Most of these writing tips are written by authors whose only publication credits are books about how to write successfully and get published. Why is it you never see these books like, "Get Published In Thirty Days!" from respectable writers such as T.C. Boyle or Tim O'Brian? Because they know they're all bullshit.
There are no surefire set of rules that will guarantee a better writer will come out of the juicer when squeezed appropriately. You've either got the talent, or you don't. If you know you have the talent, learn the craft.
Here's a list of what it takes to become a successful writer:
1. TALENT
2. CRAFT
3. PATIENCE and PERSISTANCE
That's it. No matter how much you imitate Poe, you will never become Poe.

Here's a tip from me. Don't write to please others, because that makes a badly written story and you can't please everyone. When you post somethiing up for a critique, leave your work alone. Don't defend it or explain it, let it stand on it's own. The mother has to let their babies go sometime or another. So when you get published and someone critisizes your writing style, you won't be there to defend it and the reader doesn't care what you intended to do,

You consider T.C. Boyle and Tim O'Brian to be good writers?
I don't know what to tell you, seriously. They suck compared to King.

Yes, and Stephen King agrees that writing books are filled with bullshit.
