Stumped on a log... err letter.

I have been looking everywhere for an answer to what would seem a very basic question, but I can't find it anywhere. It sounds so stupid to even ask it, but I have the teachings of three different methods floating through my head right now.

Does anyone know the proper way (or at least what is deemed proper) to cite a letter in a novel?

The letter is four paragraphs long and in the story has been sent from one character to another. And just as my main character opens the letter to read what her handsome beau has sent to her... the narrator suffers a stroke and massive heart attack because he forgot one of the basics of displaying a letter within a written work. Alas! The story comes to a sudden halt, and evil reigns triumphantly. Because good is stupid, and stands with a letter in their hand which they cannot read to progress.

I keep thinking indent it and put it as a hanging indent. Is this right? Please help!

Pull your margins in an extra inch on both sides and italicize it. That's the way my agent and publisher want it.
