And of course you’re perfect aren’t you Mike?
Every single one of us have our idiosyncrasies. Every-Single-One-Of-Us.
Do you really, seriously, think that deep inside I give a flying fuck whether or not I endear myself to a bunch of squiggles on my monitor?
Do you endear yourself to others Mike? Who are you to throw stones?
There’s been plenty before me who’ve said they’re not here to make friends. Even that Buckle person has said something in this same general arena.
And if anyone said they were here to make friends, I’d have serious doubts about their mental state.
There’s talk-back radio hosts all over the world who are both rich and famous as a result of acting like backward oxen.
Sheesh.

First off I called the thread self advertisement, not site advertisement. My work is on the site however, so it makes sense to advertise it as being here. Site benefits, I benefit, everybody benefits.
I am after more readers, if I got more useful and helpful comments I would not object to comments but my feeling is that most of them would be of the "Enjoyable read, thank you" or "Couldn't get into this, sorry" type, which don't add to my writing.
I am all for other people posting their work here and advertising it, there will always be a certain amount of spin off from which I will benefit, but the main emphasis is ME.
I have raised the idea of contacting lapsed members, I will probably do so again at an appropriate time as I think the idea a good one, however, it's not really members but guests that I am after. Members are in here primarily for their own stuff, guests come looking for a good read, audience not creators, of course as I said before, members bring guests.
The links on other sites is a good idea, I visit a couple of sites where musicians advertise as you occasionally get people wanting lyrics and I usually tell them there are a couple of thousand on here as well as sending them my own.
Could we get the search engine to show us more prominently if you googled "lyrics" or "Short stories"?
Baron:- Can you blame me. The world is a very uncertain place and I am still a feckless teenager at heart.

Ox, you can stop the blathering. Just accept it - you're the only one who misread what the thread is about. It happens, move on.

Almost. Its only my humility that mars my perfection.

I suspect from the tone of most of your posts that the opposite is true.

I have no idea, I've never tried. But in my posts I try to observe a simple rule; If I know what I'm talking about, I'll post. If I don't, I generally don't. It stops me looking like an ox.

And yet you manage to be neither. Ho hum.
Anyway, if you can drag yourself onto the topic in hand...
what are your thoughts on self-promotion?

If someone on the forums becomes antagonistic towards you then use every post where that person mentions you specifically as an opportunity for self promotion.

Good idea. Baron. I'm considering promoting myself to Sergeant Major.

Umm . . . . .with respect, I mis-read nothing.
The last three words of the post in question were “and our forum”.
Elsewhere Baron has taken me to task over this, saying that perhaps the key word was “and”.
I pointed out to him, and now I’ll do the same here, that according to Dictionary.com, “and” means “as well as; in addition to; besides; also;” and can be used to connect alternatives: “He felt that he was being forced to choose between his career and his family.”
All of that being so, where then did I mis-read anything?

If this is a serious question, I've not recently given all that much serious thought to it. Can you leave it with me?

Hey Olly
More - Bella Stander (yes, another shameless promotion for a colleague from the other place) is shit-hot on self promotion. Her site is primarily about promoting yourself as a published author, but some of it is relevant to everyone who wants to raise some awareness of themselves. Here is one; I wrote a review of "The war of wars" that I have just finished in books and authors here on the forum. Then I wrote on the fly leaf "Free book, to comment or talk about it contact me at mail@ollybuckle.com, or find my review of it as Olly Buckle on writingforums.com . Please pass it on when you have finished with it. Thank you.
A nice way of re-cycling books, an advert for me and one for the site.

Olly - have you thought about doing something that would raise awareness of writing in general? The old system of publishing in bi-weekly or monthly periodicals is dead; the best talent can be found online writing (oh my god!) blog posts, fan fiction, and other creative formats.
What if you made a point of reaching out to this emerging market? Writing tutorials geared towards the online creative writing crowd could be a very good way of bringing new people on board. There is a lot of talent out there - it's just a matter of spreading the word to the right people.

That's really outside the remit of this thread. We're talking self promotion.

Not necessarily, but it's hard to break in to as a regular gig. Lots of people do it though, and that's where the money is.

Again, I disagree. There are some good bloggers, and a multitude of semi-literate oafs with little to say. And fan fiction? I've yet to see anything that would even approach the level of 'best talent'.

That's basic SEO.
