Agents? No, Publishers!

Hi! I heard that you can just screw the agents and send your manuscript directly to the publisher? Is it true? Suggestions?

Some publishers look at work from all sources, some only consider work forwarded to them by agents. I don't know where you live but in the UK the Writers and artists Year Book has a section listing publishers which tells you the sort of work that the publisher is interested in and a submission guide. I am certain there must be equivalents of this elsewhere. It can be a fair amount of work just sorting out the publishers to forward your work to, then there is the doing of it, they say Gone with the wind was forwarded to 50 publishers before it was accepted. That's 50 trips down the post office. Mind you you could spend as much time finding some one willing to act as your agent. Personally I hustle either as the mood takes me , hoping for any acceptance. As some one said about their agent on the radio recently "That nice man who lets me keep 85% of everything he earns". It's very true really, if he's worth his salt.

As a fellow UK writer, I advise the Writers' and Artists' Yearbook. It's fantastic.

Yes, and no. The bigger publishers will toss your MS in the trash unread. The smaller the publisher, the more likely they are to read unsolicited MSS. Sadly, they're the ones who pay tiny advances.

If you want to succeed with a big publisher and a big advance, you need an agent. No question.

Absolutely. If you want to do a little research, you can start cruising the websites and directories to check it out. They will tell you flat out that they don't read unagented manuscripts.

Tor and Daw and some of those...and don't forget the POD small presses...will read you, but expect LONG delays at the former class of publisher and small reward at the other.
