Attention writers of good non-fiction . . .
. . . I need help. I have delusions of submitting a true story – an anecdote - of around 800 words to a magazine. From what I’ve seen, true stories and fiction don’t get written the same way – there seems to be more “tell” than “show” in non-fiction. This being so, would anyone have any general advice on other tricks of writing to make an anecdote sparkle?

As a long-time writer of anecdotal non-fiction and editorials, I find that the best approach is to deliver with a hint of sarcasm and irony. You won't be able to spend paragraphs showing your emotions, so you'll have to be snappy and witty with your prose. Don't waste time showing off your talent. Make your reader nod and smile.
