Hello! I'm proud to announce that my book has 15000 words so far. I'll edit the chapters when I finish it, but I'm just curious: is it good to have many chapters with shorter contents or few chapters with many contents. I have 30 chapters now. Remember The Da Vinci code? There were 124 (I think) chapters there, but I thought I read it faster than other books(except Harry Potter)

Neither are better nor worse. Do what feels right for the story. If the story dictates a multitude of short chapters, do it. If it dictates having only a few lengthy chapters, do it. If it dictates not using chapter breaks at all...wait for it...yes, you got it; do it.

my book is 30k words long so far and i have yet to start chapter 2 =) so i guess anything is good if it works for you

Personally I find books easier reads if they have a fair amount of breaks. For example: recently I read a 340 page book that had just 12 chapters. It took nearly 2 months. Conversely, I read one that was just a page longer but had 36 chapters, and it took about 10 days.

Books with more chapters are often times more difficult to put down. You find yourself awake at 2 in the morning, saying to yourself, "Just one more chapter..."

I think you just have to go with the flow and see how it feels. I like to have a book with many chapters because as you go through them, you feel like you are making more of a progression.

From my point of view (both when I'm writing and reading) short chapters are perfect because they keep you focused and never leave you to drift off with your thoughts. On the other side, I guess there are some people who prefer writing longer chapters since that's the only way they can express themselves completely without being forced to keep their thoughts concise. And as far as reading long chapters is concerned, well, I'm not sure there's anyone who prefers that  Or is there? |
