non-profit;non-"obscure"
I'm writing a short story and one of my character's parents is a director for a non-profit organization. my problem is, i don't know what that non-profit organization is. it needs to be something that requires going to conventions every month, almost like a sci-fi comic convention, or a writing convention, but perhaps not that...uhm, obscure? i'm not bashing writers or sci-fi comic fans, believe me, i am both of those more or less, but i need something that perhaps does not bring out any certain charisma of that character. for example, i don't want my character to go to a sci-fi convention because i don't want to reader to get the impression that she is a "fan" of anything. it just doesn't fit for the story.

There are several different types of not-for-profit organizations. From your description, you probably an arts organization.
There's a place in Toronto called the Arts and Letters Club, which is dedicated to the supporting the arts and which holds regular events. Nice place. Something like that would give you a location, background events, and of course, if your character is young, they are there because they have to be. Whether or not they want to be is up to you.
Hope that helps.

The way this is frequently handled is to say something like "Dad worked for some group of people that weren't trying to make money, just do good. I thought that was silly, but they were always treated with great respect"
or
"father went to a lot of conventions. These were huge groups of people who stood around and talked and got up and gave speeches and clapped at each othere. I never understood why. mother said they were trying to help the Poor..."
Something like that...the sort of vagueness a kid's mind has on such issues, painting what things are like from their view. Chance to make comments.

Did you try googling "non-profit organizations"?

thank you! i did google it actually, but i wasn't very inspired by it. it needs to be something specific, even if not completely real, because for what I'm doing it needs details. Thank you!
