What if he tried to run over someone's dog in a fit of pique only to realise that it a)was actually someone else's dog, and b) that it wasn't a speed bump he ran over on the drive up...

This may sound cliche, but I think a lot of readers would LOVE to get into the mind of someone like this--it's on the news ALL the time.

How exploring someone who left their child strapped inside a car all day while they were in a casino gambling, or at strip club, etc. It's a timely story, to say the least, because it a happens so frequently, and when it does, I always ask myself, "What the hell were they thinking!?"

You can give me an answer!

I think a generic crime could be the way to go. The story is the human drama of his being in jail and what it does to him as a person. If you want the crime/sentence thing to have a nice twist (and an interesting impact on him), I suggest that he is a career criminal who got away with many crimes but the one he's in jail for was a crime he DIDN'T commit. There's nothing more annoying than getting away with something then being punished for the same thing when you didn't do it.
