tackling the sense of place in space

When dealing with the very basics - time, place, motion - I've noticed that when writing a story that takes place in space, it can be more difficult to achieve setting due to the unknown nature of the future, combined with, locale(s) that may be differing worlds/planets altogether. Especially when they involve multiples.

Sort of like introducing characters two thirds into the story, it tends to loose the reader interest while dropping off in the inherently-cohesive department and resulting in a leaky tale at best.

What are ways around this?

I have to admit that I haven't had much of a problem. For my work space is just the bit in between settings. It pretty much gets pushed to the backgrounds in favour of more interesting locations (starship interiors, planets and the like) And if you want to catch the readers interest with new characters you need to make them dynamic enough. It also helps if there's something familiar about them, something that the readers can relate to.
