I've never been to the point of not being able to write. Now, I've not wanted to write lots of times....and I find it best to edit on those days. But I have heard of writers block. I don't see how that could be though. I have so many stories twirling around in my head that it would take me the rest of my life to write them all down.

No, I don't believe in writer's block, but I do believe in procrastination, but we'll get back to that later, ok?

Well, it can happen that you hit a wall with a particular idea, in that as it stands you'd have no idea where to go with one particular story, but in that case you could always switch to another project for a while.

When that happens to me in mid-project, experience has taught me that I am usually trying to take the work in the wrong direction.

To me, writer's block can be one or more of three things:
1. Procrastination
or
2. Your mind telling you that there are more pressing, more important, more fun, something(s) more ANYTHING than writing at the moment.
or
3. Personal boredom with the story at the moment. I don't mean that you hate your peice or are sick of it or anything, just that you need a break from it.
Check the quote in my profile ; ).
It's supposed to end with:
"It strikes all people, in all walks of life. We just give it a grand title to promulgate that tortured artist nonsense."
I completely agree with it : )
It should just be called 'Idea Block' or something, haha.
-Racheal
P.S.
I think writer's block, when it comes to creating new ideas, is actually just a need for creative prompts.
My suggestion? Try googling creative writing prompts or something and giving them a go.

I would agree entirely with the idea that writers block is caused by boredem. I would say that personally that's the case with me. If I get too bored in a day there is no way I can write because I can't seem to get my head into it. Some times it helps me if I find someone to role play with. Sometimes if I can actually become the character for a little while I can become unbored and get into one of my stories. Just thinking here. This might not be the case for you I tend to be away from the norm.
Happy Writing!!

It passes. You can wait it out.

Writer's block, for me, is usually something I get at the beginning of a piece, when I know I can take it in any direction I want. I always hesitate endlessly over the first sentence, not wanting to box it in to a specific path. Even though I know I could change things later if I don't like where they went, I have this little perfectionist demon sitting on my shoulder, badgering me to do it right the first time.

I thought I'd resucitate an old thread, rather than starting yet another on the same subject...

Can you imagine going to a restaurant and finding that none of the entrées were available because of the cook’s attack of chef’s block? How much credence would you give to brain surgeon’s block? Or firefighter’s block?
Sometimes writing comes without much effort, and sometimes it’s a terrible slog. But there’s no real excuse for not doing it.

And one that those here, like Loulou, who have to write to deadlines, will surely endorse.
Writer's block is for prima donnas and dilettantes.
