Question about sample text

When submitting a sample of your work to a publisher, is it best to choose the first pages, so the plot is clear, or what you feel is the best-written part of the book? Are publishers, on their first look at a work, looking more at style or story?

Thank you.

Send a message via Skype™ to Mike C
Give them what they want, which is generally either first 3 chapters or first 50 pages.

It should all be equally well written - if you think it has weak areas, don't send it, rewrite it.

They will have submission guidelines which will explain which of these is appropriate. If you can't find them anywhere (like on their website) then write and ask.

I also agree with Mike's second point.

As i've said before avoid just sending something randomly. Its good if you could meet the publisher or other publishers, get a sense of what they like and expect. This gives a better chance of your chapters being read rather than added to the pile.

If someone has personally met you, even if its just a hello, they will feel more of a duty to give it a proper read. If your a John Doe, they feel no guilt throwing it to the side.
