Trouble balancing a short story

Right

In a short story (5-10 pages A4) what balance would you have to strike if you had the events leading up to an event, the event iself, and then the same place five years after the event.

Must menion, this is for school so i have to follow the usual; Beggining, Development, complication, crisis, resolution.

What this is is effectively three stories, and with the above stages, i am having trouble actually discerning what to write.

Should i just write my idea and see how it turns out?

Any help would be much appreciated . . .

Yes.

I like to get the idea down first. Once you've got it down, then you can play with structure, but first get the idea down to see if it works.

Yes, just write something. Anything. When you've got something on paper it's often far easier to see where it's headed and if it's not right, you can always start over, move things around, change details... a story in progress is a fluid thing, anything can happen.

Again, just get something down. Writing is not so much writing. Its more about editing.
