When not to take advice from agents?

I've heard there are several things to look out for whenever trying to discern whether an agents advice is good or not (in this case, meaning, healthy and constructive). I've left off the obvious of what does your intuition tell you, etc...

A) Whenever they seem to suggest too often or unwarranted changes.
(was the agent a former writer him or herself?)
