The Mist - Case in Point
Just saw The Mist and yes, it was well done. Will have to admit, didn't read the story. So part of the conviction may come from the reality of the talon lined tentacles.
My question is, how original is this story. Noticing the topic of originality on other parts of the forum (can we forget this is King for a moment?) how new is the story?
The idea of 'tearing a hole into another reality though which creatures may emerge who stalk the citizens' has likely been done before (can't recall where, but it has).
...While trapped in a small town atmosphere.
...Backed by a malevolent military industrial complex.
I'm not being critical here, but isn't the real creativity in the total combination of the basic concepts along with the way it is done rather than in the basic concepts/premise alone? The originality of balance and identification with the characters?

Oh, it's original. Except the ending.
The movie's version trumps King's pathetic attempt of an ending.

i have read the story, but not seen the movie. The story is very Lovecraftian, so i can't say that it is very original, but like you said, the creativity comes from how you tell it. I've said it before: There are no original ideas, only original ways to present them.

When would you say it became this way?
There are original ideas and stories to be told. For example, there are very deeply seated issues that many people do not want to see. Maybe the initial cycle of processing this lends itself to the new story, around when they pass out of the denial stage and begin to be ready to hear it. There might be real art in these stories. If there is real truth.
What say you Truth-Teller?

Throughy,
It just seems that every idea, whether novel in itself or not, is a continuation of an existing type of story. My point is that the true art and magic is in the telling, not the idea itself.

I think Geminye hit the nail on the head.
