You should write a book on writing called 'how to undermine those more successful me and look smart doing it'.

You tell me to read thoroughly yet you seemed to missed 90% of what On Writing was about or even what I was saying. You end a paragraph with a line like 'you shouldn't settle for one guy's advice (aka listen to me)

Why did he recommend this E.B. White book? Two reasons; he knows it's good and he doesn't want to be considered as a know it all prick. You seem to be upset at Stephen King for his book (which is only about alochol and getting hit by a car) because other people quote him as 'read a lot, write a lot'. These are OTHER PEOPLE quoting/paraphrasing Stephen King.

What are you doing? I'm confused. One paragraph you're insulting the content of his book and the next you're saying he has sound advice and you're not knocking the book. I forgot that's all that's in there because I just finished reading it two days ago and forgot he wouldn't shut up about his damn car crash

I understand your point of 'get advice from mutliple sources' but you're posts could be 95% less and get the same point across...That is KIND OF common knowledge...
You're still hung up on this? Way to go! You show everyone who's the interweb boss!

You're the 'kick the guy in the shins and run' type, aren't you? Trying to save face by acting superior, still, after I proved you assinine.

Personally, I find that I write when I think I have a twist, sentence or something that is going somewhere. With my current project it is draining a lot of my energy and I have very little typed. I read and read and read, but not everyone is the same.

King writes what King writes and knows how to write what King writes. He has thousands of different idea I bet he has never even developed.

So, basically what I am trying to say - not everyone is the same, not everyone wants what someone else has. Be different, do it your own way. That makes it "YOUR" accomplishment it does not have to be inspired by someone who has bookshelves and bookshelves dedicated to their books in every bookstore.

Do it your way, do what works. Lord knows I have 4 hours a day to read and write.

So do most people on this forum, I should imagine. I mean, ideas are cheap and plentiful, but good prose takes real effort to craft.

"On Writing" is valuable because it's writing advice from someone who's quite genuinely a very successful author. And it's worth reading just for the sneers about writing groups... it's rare for me actually to laugh aloud on reading something, but King managed it there.

I've not read On Writing. What I gather from the vid I posted however is that it isn't just a 'Read and Write' dictum as he spoke to this audience of writers.

Rather, his stance is about the intent of how this practive should be used, to find your own voice within the context of the current readers market.
(reflects his commercial aspect?)

Which may be obvious to some. Others not.

But the formula that works best for King is what best works for King.

- Didn't know this was such an inflamatory issue. Why fuel the heat? Are we groping for the dramatic here to see how it plays out?

Only one man can produce the heated debate that has risen now.

Stephen King. He is the master of all things.

Bow before him.

Oh, I'm sorry. Talking about Stephen King and his views on writing on a thread about Stephen King's views on writing is me sucking him off. To quote doctor evil, "rrrrrriiiighthhhtttt"

I wasn't aware that my pointing out someone's contradictions (only related to King because we're talking about him) in their words related to being on knees. I suppose you're the leading expert on homosexuality, good job.

What are you saying? By your words it sounds like 'don't listen to other authors, do it yourself' which is as foolish as the people in the horror movies that say 'we should split up.'

My accomplishments in writing have been inspired directly from Stephen King. Don't get me wrong, I've no aspirations to be Stephen King (though I once did) but he is the author that made me love reading and made me want to create and write. Over the past few years I've read many different authors from all kinds of fiction and it's helped me with writing. I admire King for his stern resolved, you write and you always write - no matter what. It's his 'do or do not, there is no try' attitude that made him as successful as he is. It's very sound advice for writing or even any creative field.

I hardly think it's wrong or impractical to draw advice from the well that has kept me hydrated through the honing of my craft.

If I hadn't just read the book, all this information for me to use wouldn't be so fresh in my mind. There is a difference between grovelling and recalling what was written.
