Yep, personally though I think sci-fi often suffers more from over-serious characters than it does from corny humour.

Oh, sorry, that's what I was refering to... the seriousness.

Now Episode One is different, becuase a lot of people I know liked fourfive and six, but couldn't stand one two and three.

Then you simply haven't read the "proper" books. It's not all go there, kill that, save the world. And as for Silmarillion, I've tried reading it four times and failed each time. It's just a collection of names and places and is very, very different than The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings. And you do know Tolkien wrote a lot more than those three books?
Besides, Episode 1 vs everything else is a great indicator of Dragonlance. I liked the Chronicles back when I first read them, but it was mostly because it was the only non-Tolkien fantasy I had read. Now, fifteen years later, I have read a lot more Dragonlance and fantasy in general and can easily see how crap they really are. Weis & Hickman were very inexperienced back then and had never even written anything in Dragonlance before. Try reading Dragons of Summer Flame or War Of Souls, and you'll see what I mean. Those are so much better than the Chronicles.
I'll shut up now.

I promise this is the last comment. I have in fact read Dragons of a Summer Flame, and War of Souls. They were fun, but not the epitome of fantasy literature.
