Novel - Basic formatting

Starting a novel tonight, it occurred I may want to format in ms word properly before starting.

Is there an accepted standard - margins/word wrap/text and font size?

I use OpenOffice as it's practically the same word processor, but completely free and works on Linux as well as Windows. (and probably Mac, although I haven't tested it).

I simply use the default A4 page with 2cm margins on each side and font size 12. Being a word processor, it's simple to change it later on if you prefer or leave that to the editor. I care first of all on writing the story.

WriterDude, Thanks for the post.

As do I. But for some reason my Word keeps reverting to the 1st set font type and size, etc. For some reason, I have to constantly keep resetting it. Contacting Microsoft is out of the question.

Besides, won't have much time when finished. I have some unusual pressures exerting their influence -- but with all risks aside, I'm hoping this will help the story.

lisajane is an unknown quantity at this point
I use 1/2 line spacing with size 10 font, only cause my eyesight is stuffed and that makes it easier for me to read.

However, I'll change the format depending on submission guidelines once it's ready to go.

Haha! I'm using OpenOffice too.

All my chapters are saved as separate files and I use Gnome's emblem doohickeys to rate their quality. Checkmark for finished, "oh no" for crap.

OpenOffice's dictionary is seriously lacking though. It thought the word "undyed" was misspelled.

Open Office is a great product and you can open MS word documents with it.

I tend to go for font size 11 with the default spacing. I think formatting is something best left to the end until then.....
