Perhaps a morbid question...
...but it's the sort of thing I think of. If a satellite falls out of the sky and lands on me before I get my book published (which, after all, may very well happen) can I designate someone to publish it for me?
Thank you.

The rights to your book get passed along the same as anything else you own, i.e., through your will.
So, yes.

What does it matter? Would you really be in any position to care?

Are you likely to have a satellite fall on you head, or have you watched too many Zurich Insurance ads?

I remember reading something about writers and their works after they die... it was about protecting a deceased writers works and making sure that the proper people benefit from it.
The main point it made was to make sure that you designate a person in your will to own and control the copyright to the works that you have written, especially the unpublished ones.
I forget where I saw this, but I am sure I can find it again... I will do some looking around and post the link.

Your unpublished works become part of your estate and can left to whomever you designate in your will. You could, if you have a decent sized life insurance, have it noted in the will for the book to be self published and distributed to your friends and family later.

Thank you, all.
I agree, the satellite thing is unlikely, but when I go, I'm sure it will be in an odd way.

Damn, you beat me to the Confederacy reference. It was the first thing that jumped into my mind as well. He did kill himself, though. Not exactly a freak satellite mortality.

A satellite wouldn't survive re-entry.
You fail.

Though you would be dead and it wouldn't matter the rights pass on like a will. To your wife, kids, then parents. In that order I think.
I think you have been watching too many Zurich insurance ads.

Basically a guy parks his car right at the back of the carpark because he doesn't want any accidents to happen. As he walks away a satellite falls on it. Simple as that really.
