When You Need to Write it Down and You Have No Paper!

So how do you remember it till you get to write it down? Or do you just use a voice recorder? Or do you just forget about it?

If I have a pen, I write on my hands and wrists. If I have my cell phone I text it to myself. If I don't have either of these things, I try to remember, but usually don't. This is why I try to take a pen everywhere I go.

Sometimes I try to just remember it - I usually fail.
I almost always have a pen and paper on me, though. So I'll write it there, or, as Johnna said, on my hands/arm. I also use my cell phone and leave myself little notes, usually just a few words or a sentence so that I'll remember the gist of what I want to write.

The cell thing is a good idea! I also try to write on my hand...

You kniow, after reading a few threads on this topic, I have decided that I am very lucky; I never forget ideas I have. I comne up with one, expand on it a little, and find it easy to recall when I get access to writing materials. =)

But, if you do have trouble remmebering, your skin is a very good paper substitue, as long as you don't sweat too much. I don't use a cel phone much, so I can't say how that would work, but it does sound like a possibility. Alternatively, you could take a sharp object and inscribe the idea into your flesh, hoping that the scab won't distort it...

I actually did that once, but later I found I could remember the idea anyway. At least it made a good story while the scabs lasted. (In case you haven't noticed, I'm sort of a weirdo...)

My memory's quite good, so if it's a great idea I can usually remember the idea until I get somewhere to write it down.

If my bag's nearby, there's usually a handful of receipts and sometimes a pen to scribbe it down on.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I asked you if you perhaps had a neurobiological deficit (I think it was to do with your needs re crits). At the time you said "nay."

Now this.

Mate, I know the signs. Trust me.

When you have absolutely no access to physical entities, use mnemonics.

I carve it into the skin on my thigh with the compass I used in high school.

Edit:

I can usually word associate my idea with a keyword in the idea and recall it later, much like the method I used to pass tests in high school and college. Maybe it does not make sense to everyone else, but it works for me. I have always had a good memory and have hours a day sans writing utensils to think about my story.

I have been known to stop a stranger on the street and ask for pen and paper. Usually I only have to ask for a pen because I almost always have old receipts in my wallet to write on.

Seriously, though: The older I get, the more quickly I forget things (writing-related and otherwise), so I make sure I carry a little notebook that will fit in my purse. And I will tell people in a minute: "Slow down, I need to write that down!" There's no shame in my game! lol

I don't get that many ideas. If I do, there's usually a pen and paper available somewhere.

I used to have trouble with this. Now I just carry pencil and paper everywhere. It's not so hard, I get used to the little notebook in my pocket.

Interesting ideas, all. I've been carrying around one of those mini pocket Moleskins in my back pocket and it's been working. Sometimes I forget my pen though. That's a bitch.

I find that I get too many ideas though so I run them past my Muse (kind of a Sean Connery-type) and my Critic (Clint Eastwood??) and check to see if it's worth even remembering.
