CF, you need to sit back and think about what you are saying. Several people have already pointed out you are seeing aggression where there is none. Build up a shell and except that maybe your wrong this time, it will make you look better for when the time you are right.

Okay Captain... if you are so sure of yourself then why do you care what we think. Go ahead and call the publisher and ask them for feedback. I even said in my last post that you might even get some since you say you have the name of the person you sent it to.

Here is my question though... you said

Quote:
I just got a form rejection on my first manuscript submission
and you also said

Quote:
It was requested, so I know who I sent it to.
so to my question.... if it was requested, and you sent it to a specific person, why would you get a form rejection? If they are rude enough to do that to someone that they initially showed interest to, I wouldn't waste my time asking for feedback.

oh and you DID ask for our opinion...

What do you guys think? Is it okay to call, or does that idea suck?

We both know exactly what you were doing, an if these other clowns chime in without even understanding the thread, that doesn't change anything.

Maybe you didn't the catch the belittling tone of Maia and Talia's post because English isn't your first language, but it's obvious. I just defended myself, and then some people, who apparently can't comprehend the written word or just didn't read the whole thread, agreed with the trouble makers.

First part - how should I know? But it's almost as if they owe me feedback, and as I said before, in any other industry I would be shirking my responsibilities if I didn't call. (I know now because I called, but that's later in the post)

Second part - where did I ever say I wasn't looking for opinions? I told you before that you were misinterpreting what I was griping about. I can probably write whatever I want in this reply, and you will continue to tell me that there is a specific answer I'm looking for.

Even though I'm being very very clear, you don't understand me. That's why your responses don't make any sense. I doubt there's anything I can do about it. Probably not too much you can do about it either.

Anyway, now to what the thread is really about:

Spoke to someone at the agency. They weren't too thrilled to get my call, and seemed really nervous.

The person I sent the book to left the agency last week, and her last day was the postmarking of the response. So, I figure she put it in the mail on her second to last day because she wasn't going to get to reading it and/or responding to it.

I don't think I said my name,(or if I did, I said it really fast - my real name is kind of long and weird, so they probably didn't get to write it down either) so I would say the chances of getting blacklisted are pretty low too. Hooray!

Ahem pot calling kettle..! How condescending are you?! Just cuz someone has a foreign name you think they are only disagreeing with you cuz they can't understand English properly?!

The point everyone is making is that the first two people who replied WEREN'T calling you an idiot OR attacking you in any way.

Mamamia was warning you that publishers can be mean and call people 'idiot newbies' when they pester for feedback when they said they don't give feedback. Everyone knows how bitchy offices can be, and this might be one office that you don't wanna piss off (whether your fault or not) cuz you might need them one day. The second poster basically said the same and gave some more blunt advice. Just cuz someone doesn't bullshit you with unnecessary politeness does not mean they are attacking you.

So calm down and don't take everything so personally. You got your answer, and the opinions you asked for, so chiiill. There are so many more important things to get your knickers in a twist over.

While CF may have overreacted, some of you are being really pedantic.

The man just got rejected, give him some space. Now's not the time to show off how experienced you are in the industry.

Actually it's never time for that.

This is why people dislike you you know. If you talked like that to me I would take your head off.

decapitations, c

Edit:
This is a forum for writers, so I'm told. Why are there so many non-writers clogging the forum arteries? If you're not a writer, and not a mod or an admin, why are you here?

mamamaia, you, MikeC, and others like you seem to hang out on the forums for the sole purpose of propping up your own egos. Neither of you miss a chance to tell an aspiring writer how stupid or immature or pretentious you think they are, and it's getting old.

It's also incredibly unsporting. The writers on this board are opening themselves up to criticism and possible humiliation every time they post their work and talk about their rejections. You don't do this, you just sit in your ivory towers and snipe at them. Nothing like crushing a few hopes before breakfast, eh? Bet that makes you feel good.

Here's an idea. If you're so damn brilliant, go write something. Let us all see just how much about writing you really know. And if you can't, do us the favor of shutting up.
At the very least stop using these forums as a place to work out your own self-esteem issues.

Really. Send me the number and I'll call them for you. I'm much more winning and diplomatic.

You realize that they posted by typing? You realize tone is connected with speach?

I hope you plan on selling all your books on tape then, dude.

I don't even think I overreacted, and it's not that I'm pissed about getting rejected. A couple people came into my thread to take a dump on me and I defended myself, that's it really. They just dumped on me in a way that they could argue later that it's not what they meant, but I think it's pretty obvious what their intentions were.

If you want to be a writer, you have to get used to the idea that people are going to line up to tell you that you suck. Look how many books Stephen King has sold, and people still give him shit. So, I have already mentally prepared myself for the submission process.

It was a well established agency, so their response that the agent just left actually makes sense. If they sent out rejection slips to requested manuscripts as a matter of policy, they would probably get calls all the time. The woman on the phone was flustered enough to show that it doesn't happen that often.

It was Manus & Associates.

Like I said though, I doubt that's their usual policy. It just went like that because the person left.

If the person left a few days after seeing your manuscript maybe it didn't get a thorough read.
