has this been done before??

I'm working on a fantasy novel right now, and here is a basic outline of the plot:

A mysterious man walks into a town, but everyone knows that man. He has been in the army for 10 years, and comes home. He finds friend in the form of a horse thief, but then the thief gets captured. man finds thief, but then betrays his friend to join bad guy.

The only thing that it kind of sound like to me at least is the Chronicles of Riddick, but even then its only the good guy goes bad part. Anyone else hear of this in modern times?

Why is he mysterious if everyone knows him? I personally would not read a story about someone searching for a horse theif if that is the only thing going on. The idea seems a little bland... you would need to go into it a little more.

If there's a horse thief, there've got to be horses. And then if you're not careful, you'll have one of those horse-novels on your hands.

Talia_Brie is an unknown quantity at this point
Was there a movie with Jodie Foster and Richard Gere that weas sort of like that. And about fifty movies with Clint Eastward.

If the basic scenario is someone coming home after a war, then it's been done. All those basic stories have been done. You need to stop worrying about whether it's been done, and write your version of it.

I agree with Talia and think you should write your version of this story. Sure, every Western includes this idea but think about the millions of romance stories about a girl meeting a boy. You can do it but you should think through your story very carefully, I believe, so that you can discover your version.

Post your ideas and maybe some people can help to guide you.
