Magic?

For those who don't know, I'm a fantasy writer.

I'm trying to work out the magic in my particular world. So far I have mages who have elemental powers, witches/wizards who have powers of the mind, and a couple of tribes in different places who have "magic of the land". There are also various necromancers, thaumaturgists, and shamans who haven't come up much thus far.

My trouble is, I've also mentioned sorcerers, who I'm fairly certain will play a pretty big part in my second book. The thing is... I don't know what kind of powers they hould have, because I want each class of magic user to have different powers.

If anyone has any suggestions or tips on this, I'd be much obliged.

You could always go the elemental route

Well, perhaps give them control of life, as in they can control others (humans/animals) actions. I could also see them having the power of the 'heavens' (lightening, etc...weather..)

Hope that helps.

If you don't know what they're going to do, how do you know they'll have an important role?

Sam: Mages are my elementals already.

Charlie: Control of life might havepotential... But my witches/wizards pretty much control humans. Maybe something with animals, though. Thanks.

Krim: My main characters will be visiting them pretty soon in my second book.

Off the top of my head, your sorcerors could be any of the following:
  • those who learn to summon and command spirits (but not spirits of the dead -- that's obviously necromancers -- I'm talking about the anima of a place or something);
  • dream-weavers;
  • people with power to see or alter the future, e.g. prophets;
  • manufacturers of magical objects;
  • those with power over light and darkness;
  • those with the power of moving things with the mind, e.g. telekinesis or levitation; or
  • weather-workers.

I guess the type of magic you want will depend on whether they're good or bad (or both).

The only one that I can think of is that of a healer that can, if you want, also be used to inflict pain by using an opposite effect of healing wounds.

Non Serviam: Your list has given me some ideas. I like the idea of prophets and dream related magic. Thanks.

Assassin: They're good--they live in monasteries and devote themselves to "light" gods. I have healers who can kill with magic already; they're a type of mage.

Personally, I think that's way too much magic. But it's your world. >_< And necromancers could deal with sex magic. Succubi magic, dealing with demons and all that to drain energy from the act of procreation.

Where are the warlocks?

My world is very magic-centric. In the second book, I'm trying to move away from that, though.

I always thought wizards and warlocks were the same thing.

I personally love books full of magic, but you have to make sure you explain it well. And the magic between users must be serperatable or people might easily become confused with who is good/evil and what they are. Sounds good though, if you post part of teh story i will definatly read it and critique it. Good luck!

I always related wizards to be the magical equivalent of scientists.

Warlocks according to google: (define:warlock)

Quote:
a term coined in the Burning Times . It was used to denote a traitor to the Craft, or one who had betrayed the followers of the Old Religion. It's origin is Scottish. Because of the negative connotations, it is not used by most Wiccans today.
Quote:
A derogatory term which literally means "oathbreaker". It is a common misconception that male witches are called warlocks. However, male witches are no different than females in this respect and so they are simply called witches.
Quote:
a male witch or demon
I use them for magic warfare. A bloodthirsty lot.

I have special mages for battle, heh. I like mages.

I'm considering taking out 'wizards' and caling males and females 'witches' in the traditional Wiccan sense. I never liked either the term 'wizard' or 'warlock' anyway.

Stabering: I posted some of my novel but had a mod remove it 'cause I wasn't comfortable posting it up. Click the second link in my sig for some of my fantasy.
