lyricwriting and poetry?
i have for long wanted to write a really great lyric or write my own small musical or something like that, but i have a hard time finding the right words or coming up with a story for my lyrics, there is ofen the same words that pops up in my head when i try to write something new or else i sit for hours with a blank sheet of paper and an emty head. so my question is do you think starting writing and reading poetry will help me finding new words or ways to express myself and become a better lyric writer? or is there any better ways?

i don't know that studying poetry will help you to become a good lyricist, but it can't hurt, since you'll learn about meter and rhyme and lyrical flow and such... all elements of good songs...
you really need to study the kind of lyrics you want to write, as well... get the how-to books on writing lyrics by sheila davis... she's the best teacher you'll find on the art... i learned from her in person, back when i was a newbie member of the sga in nyc... and if you want any help, just drop me a line any time...
have fun!

Music and poetry can either be at odds or complimentery.
Depends on your genre of music, the beat, the speed.

never worry about reusing old ideas, if you've never been published they are fresh to your audience. i often put whole scenes in stories that i've written before, who cares?

Ideas don't come to order, equally if you don't put them down as soon as you think of them you will lose them forever, keep a note book with you at all times, put everything in it, it is only for your own use at this stage so it won't matter if it isn't perfect, just so it takes you back to the idea. Same thing applies if it is incomplete, like just a couplet that pleases you. When you have your blank spells sitting there you can transcribe everything onto a computer file or visit the file and start using cut and paste to bring relevant bits together. I always find it is n't long before I find something to do.
