If you have the opportunity....
If you have the opportunity I would recommend joining a writing group. Last night I met with a local Houston writing group, and oh what fun! Also, it appears that this is going to be very helpful.
I have never written before, and am working on my first novel. The people in the group were wonderful; using constructive criticism and giving me new ideas. I am so inspired now! I really feel that this could be the key to me becoming a good writer 
So, if you don’t mind taking criticism and you don’t have your head up your, well ya know, I would really recommend finding a local writers group, or even start one! While, I love the forum, the reality of people being in front of you who have read what you submit really really gives a new perspective.
