Good sources for inspiration?

Okay so I have made a start on some contemporary fantasy writings - still only outlining a couple of short stories I have posited in the same universe (don't wanna bite off more than I can chew). Still, I would like to find more authors for inspiration - I've taken some inspiration after reading Natasha Mostert's "Season of the Witch" (which sets witchcraft and alchemy in a contemporary cyberculture setting) - and I'm aiming for other books that skilfully blend different genres and contrasting themes - mythology and the modern world - so well together.

I think you might like to go through some of Charles de Lint's short stories (a good old collection is "Dreams underfoot"). He writes urban fantasy stories in a city called Newford and uses a lot of mythology elements, legends. Some call his style "urban myth".

Hope that helps !

I personally enjoy Tad Williams and Robert Jordan when it comes to fantasy, but that's just my taste. The Wheel of Time is a good series (Jordan) and if you're looking for a refreshingly unique fantasy plot, try the War of the Flowers (Williams). You may not like them as I do, but it's worth a try, I suppose.

George RR Martin paints a rich and vivid world in his "Song if Ice and Fire" series. I find his work very inspiring.

I absolutely love Jim Butcher- he writes amazingly. His Codex Alera series is my favorite, but if you want modern fantasy then I would recommend his Dresdan Files series. It's pretty good and was made into a tv show- if that means anything to you.

This is cheesy, but Lord of the Rings. A lot of times I just pop in the DVD. It gives me something to think about other than what I am writing, and sometimes it is good not to ONLY think of your story while your writing. Silly, I know.

Wow I hadn't thought of looking at things like LotR - I wonder if that works for everyone - I might just find it too distracting...

I find inspiration in lots of places: music, movies, books...but also just from observing the world around me, listening to people and that kind of thing.

If I were you I'd read books in this genre just to test the waters and see what's already been done. Then I'd go for contrast; Try alternating between straight fantasy and straight realism. Anything by Nick Hornby is recommended. You'll give your imagination a chance to mingle with both genres on its own, instead of using other people's world's as a basis. You might come up with some surprising story ideas this way.
