Arrow My 4 Stages of Writing

In my writing I have discovered that I go through four stages. I am sharing these so that other writers may be able to relate and try out my ways of coping with the dreaded stage 2.

NOTE: these are personal opinions, and experiences. Do not take them as hard facts.

Stage 1

I have a new idea and am excited about it. I sit aroudn brainstorming about and soon begin to write. I am optimistic about it, and am usually positive about what I have written.

Stage 2

This is the stage that usually kills a work. Almost all writers experience it. I begin to detest what I had written and cannot write anything I feel is worth keeping. If I give up on a project it is in this stage.

Stage 3

It can be tough to go into stage 3, but it is always worthwhile. Sometimes I will go itno without any prompting. That tends to happen when I am in arleaxed mood. I can occasionally coax myself into it by editing my old chapters. Breathing soem new life into the older parts can give me the boost I need to write the new parts.

Stage 4

Stage 4 is when I write my best. I will almost always go on a logn writing spree that lasts for several hours. I go into my 'zone' and forget about anything else. Thsi stage is very similar to Stage 1, and a stage 4 can eiother go into a stage 1 or a stage 2.

So basically: stage 2 is my enemy. The trick is to not concentrate on the writing during stage 2 and perhaps take a short break into hobbies. Editing older chapters is probably my most reliable method. Or writing a short story will also help.

Seems like you've got a handle on the process (at least personally). I understand about stage 2. If I applied these stages to myself I see that I hardly ever reach stage 4 and spend most of my time on stage 3.

Spend more time on stage one, and you should have less trouble on stage two. I brainstorm and research for a week, at the very least, before I start seriously writing the story. It is like digging for gold before you have gathered the proper equipment, and so you just end up using your hands.
