Filing for Unemployment: Should I or Shoudn't I?
Hello folks, I'm wondering if anyone can help me out on this question. I recently quit my job as of last November to do some traveling and actively search for jobs related to writing and do more reading and writing, since I dropped most of those habits and skills when I worked. And for the most part I've been using what funds I had saved up for some books, both for learing and entertainment, and I'm debating whether or not on taking some writing classes or workshops. But all these things have been taking a toll on my funds and I want to know if I should file for Unemployment and use some of that weekly stipend for my studies. I've been trying to find the advantages and disadvantages of filing for unemployment and I haven't been successful. I always thought unemployment were for those who really need it. I'm no where destitute but I also don't have work or any sufficent amount of funds to go to school.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this dilemna? Has anyone been in the same situation. I appreciate any input on the matter.

Were I you, I would see how much, if any, funding I could get for taking classes. Assuming you are taking local university (or the like) classes.
Beyond that, I'm no expert, but you should at least be able to go in and talk to someone to see if unemployment is an option.

Umm, there aren't any disadvantages to filing for unemployment except that you're expected to be actively looking for work...

It gets you money and a little help in finding a job. Just remember that you have to actively look for employment or you'll be cut off.

If you're entitled, claim.

I'm not sure you'll even be eligible considering you quit your job and haven't been working. However, I'd give it a shot...worst that can happen is you get a no.
I will tell you, though, that if you ARE on unemployment you can't be starting your own small business (unless you go through a special program...and it's not geared toward creative pursuits) so if you are at all successful with freelancing you may have some issues.

how can you qualify for it when you quit!?... won't work in the us, that's for sure... and yes, it would be morally wrong to take it, when so many need it and did not have jobs they quit and don't have the ability to find another one, as you must... it's not meant to support folks who simply prefer not to work, so they can write, or whatever...

You can get unemployment benefits if you quit your job. If it was for a good reason, you get full benefits. If not, your benefits get suspended for several weeks and then you're only eligible to receive a fraction of your full benefits. But you can still claim it.

Does it vary by state? Also, I don't know if your former employer has any bearing on your benefits.

That should be changed. There are a lot of people that get laid off that deserve even more benefits than what they receive. Perhaps once taxpayers decide to pay for people that voluntarily left their jobs, then it would be all fine and dandy.

No, it shouldn't be changed, because people shouldn't be penalized for switching careers or quitting jobs they don't like.

When they could've endured that career in the first place. Most people hate their jobs, some people lose their jobs.

So everyone has to hate their job, then?
Silly logic.

There are the privileged few. I don't want my tax money to go to people that voluntarily left their job, though.

I don't want my tax money to go to an overfunded military.
Feels nice to want, doesn't it?
