First of all I like the idea. I have found it hard to explain, manager, or understand such a massive conspiracy. It may be easier to have the society to simply accept the status quo and the society be set up where anyone who does not accept the party line ,so to speak, is considered somehow suspicious or even dangerous.
You can then use an outsider such as your main character to examine issues that any reader would quickly recognize as the Kool-Aid our current leaders are passing out.
