Advice on Cultural Text

Hey guys, I'm new here, just wanted to ask for some advice. I've been thinking about writing a book about my culture, as I am the child of immigrants to the US. I was wondering what was the best way to go about accomplishing these two goals:

1. I want an uninitiated person to understand what it's like to be in this comunity
2. I don't want others in this community in the future to forget what it was like in this time period

I was struggling with the type of writing I should choose whether nonfiction or fiction and what type; what are your thoughts?

sorry, but there's no definitive answer to your quandary... first of all, you have to figure out what you can write best... second, what you want to write most...

either fiction or non-fiction can accomplish what you want... neither is better or worse... you might want to try both, to see which 'grabs' you...
