Break the ice

Howdy All,

How have people actually started writing a chapter for the first time, do people know the whole story before they start the begining, middle and end?

Often I have an end or a theme or even a begining but not all three!

So do people fire up word and write a page or a chaper/chapters etc...?

I would just like to know how people start I think maybe I have a HUGH lack of confidence, hence I thats why I have not written anything yet.

One other thing do people know the genre before they start or do you write the story and then it falls into a genre naturally?

Thanks for reading ... cake time!

About the genre thing, usually ou have some idea of what genre you wouldlike to write. However, if halfway through the piece you realize you would rather write another genre, it is within your power to change it.

As far as my writing habbits go, I usually begin with a skeleton chapter. After I write the skeleton, I can pick out places in it to, advance the plot, expand on my character's personalities, and such.

I try to insert humor, or horror, or natural feelings like those into the writing -- whatever the situations calls for.

As far as knowing the whole story...it helps, but it's not all important. If you don't know the whole thing, be prepared to do a lot of revision. (but how does that differ from most fiction? It doesn't, you're going to revise a lot anyway.)

The only rule I have FatHarry is that I have no rules!
I have a couple of novels sitting in drawers (they are definitely too dire to inflict on the world!) and with each I had no idea where they might go. Some were a loose idea. Some were a powerful person that I wanted to write about and things would kind of 'happen' to them..... And I never worry about the genre. Many cross over into one or two genres anyway. I don't like to be defined so narrowly!
A lot of my idea's are those 'what if' ones....ie, what if a life-changing event occured to such and such person at such and such time in their lives? And I go from there.
A novel I have recently submitted to a publisher is different in that I did know the story from beginning to end. I could see the whole thing in my head clearly. I felt I could see and knew the characters and could almost walk down the streets where it took place. Perhaps this clarity is why I finally felt this book reasonable enough to submit.
Good luck FatHarry, hope you overcome your lack of confidence. Your post alone is well written and concise, so I imagine your writing is too.

I findn that the best way to get somehwere is to know where your going. It is often important to outline at least the basic plot of your story before you begin writing.

Thanks everyone!

The genre I have in mind is sci-fi horror its a fine line between the 2 so not sure which one it falls into, also would like to put humour into it without it becomming RedDwarf.

Loulo - Novels written and in your draws wow well done you have actually done it, good luck with the publisher!

The funny thing is the more I talk about my ideas the more the story develops things just spring into my mind.

Anyway thanks again.

FatHarry!
