A matter of names
Some you may remember some of the other stories I've posted up here (although probably not), where the main character was named Rand. Well I've finally decided to take a break from the story with Rand that I soblindly cling to the name, in favor of another.
This story follows a young man, a rogue deadly skilled with a bow. Before I use to name characters like this Sky.
My question is, would the name Sky be (for lack of a better word) lame? Or perhaps cliche'?

You could go to this website, it gives the meanings of names so you could find one that fits your character better, although sky sounds fine to me: http://www.20000-names.com/

Hmmm....Call him Jim. Jim the Archer. Jim the Almighty. Yeah...I like the sound of that.
Orin is good too.

Whats in a name anyway? Pick something you like, if the story is good then it will grow on the reader no matter how wierd it is.

This is true as long as i can pronouce the name without a lot of effort.
I admit that long drawn out, and complicated names may sometimes be useful.
However your protagonist should be someone i can read about with ease where names are concerned.
Some names can roll around in your mouth for years and never taste good.
That having been said, the names Sky, Jim, Rion, Orion, and Rand are all simple enough. It doesn't seem we have any problem coming up with them here at wf.

You should always pick what you like, just be sure that the name makes sense with the story line.
I use Behind the Name's random name generator if I need to come up with a 'custom fit'. You can choose from many different countries with endless combinations. http://behindthename.com/random/

If you call that a name your book probably have bigger issues than what your MC is called.

I've always been inclined to surf a couple dozen name databases for one that I like or a meaning that I want my character to match. Very few names in any of my newer stories are there without reason unless I made them up.

I just steal names from real people. I don't tell them, of course.

Or you could find a book on your favorite sports team or random sports teams, prefferably one that has a list of players past and preasent and then randomly flick through the list and stop, then close you eyes and stick a pin in the page, that's the Characters forename, then do the same again for the surname... problem solved
My main characters called Babe Madden
