Questions about posting blogs

I have a feeling this is supposed to be in writing 101, but seems like this might be okay to ask here.

Is it okay to post lyrics, excerpts from books, etc., as long you give credit to the author by attaching his/her name, title of work, etc.?

And what are the other do and don't to blogging?

If you follow what you've written you should be good. I'm still new in the blogging world so I don't know any other do's or not's.

the rules for blogging in re legality, are no different than for any other form of public-accessible writing/publishing...

proper attribution must be provided for any work by others that you quote from... for details of the laws covering such stuff, go here:

What you need to follow is the principle of "fair use". Fair use is not a legal code, but a set of prescedents where the courts have interpreted the law, thereby allowing limited use of copyrighted material. It's a big grey area, and I'm no legal expert so I can't advise you on specific examples.

In general though, courts look at amount of the original you use and amount of your work that is compsed of the original. They also look at what impact your work would have on the ability of the copyright owner to make money off his work and purpose of the use (ie educational and journalistic are usually given more leeway).

all of which are explained in detail on the gov't site i gave you the link to...

either go by what you find there, or ask a literary attorney, if you're still in doubt... no one here is qualified to give legal advice, so take all we say with a hefty dose of morton's and cya by checking with an official source...

you can use the 'ask an expert' option [or whatever it's called] on the wga site [ www.wga.org ] about things to do with writing, but they may also refer you to an attorney...

Don't quote anything. Regardless of legality. If the only way you can foll your blog is by recycling other people's words, don't bother. There's enough crap blogs out there already.

Not even quotations from authors, writers, and thinkers?

I read several blogs by editors and agents, and almost all of them use quotations from other sources. However they ALL accredit the source. I see no reason why you shouldn't use someone else's words in your blog if they have inspired you along a certain thinking path or if they happen to express how you feel at a particular moment in a better way than you could. Being inspired by other people is good and right! We don't live in a vacuum.
