Demons
I have tons of ideas for new and fresh demons for my Lucy Knickleback story. But, I watched Pirates of the Caribbean last night and remembered the second one had Davy Jones, and I realized they didn't make him up. Could I use Davy Jones in my story?

You could, but why would you want to? Davy Jones wasn't really half Kraken, or whatever they made him in the film. He was a pirate, methinks. I doubt you have to use him in your story, since you're just wondering if you could add him in there. I'd say don't, but it's a free country.

go ahead but don't portray him just like they did in Pirates or you may be slapped with a lawsuit.

Rather than use the exact character, why don't you think of other minor mythological characters you could adapt for your story? I loved what they did with Mr. Vanderdecken but people don't want to see the same thing regurgitated too much.

I agree with Dweller. Why don't you take another historical figure and re-invent it. Maybe Medusa and the Gorgans, for example. Or Prometheus. There are plenty out there.
I don't see the point in regurgitated the Davy Jones from Pirates.

That was Davy Jones? I could have sworn it was Cuthulu.

Better to use your own ideas than borrow from someone else, any day of the week
