Andor - use the name or not?
Alright, what do you think of this? I wanted to name my fictional fantasy land Andor, but someone recently pointed out to me that this is apparently the name of one of the lands in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.
Do you think I should scrap the name and use something else? Will the name Andor be as instantly recognisable as if I used Hogwarts or something?

For the sake of good will I would say use something else. It is a recogniseable name considering Jordan is one of the top selling fantasy authors in the market.

It's only a name, and not even a good one, to be honest. Think of another - it shouldn't be hard...

or, you can switch it around a bit and use 'andro' or 'nador' or 'adron'...

If you use it, everyone will think your a talentless hack.
If you use it, you will also get published. You're choice.

Nice avatar, Mr. hat. I must have missed a few posts.
Realistically speaking, even if you keep it the same, a reasonably semi-decent literary agent will recognize the name, and suggest that you change it to further your chances of getting published. Do you really have a choice?

It's always sounded rather Tolkienesque to me. Just seems like a name he would use. Mordor. Gondor. Andor.
Naturally, I can show you Andor on a map of Rand-Land, but havn't a clue which blob in the middle east is Iran and which is Iraq.

I wouldn't know, but when I read the first book years ago I thought those creatures that attacked sounded just like Orcs except with different names.

Whatever you do when you write a fantasy story, make sure you google some of the words to make sure they're not a)names from other stories, b)a foreign language. I had some names in one, and my teacher read it,and she told me some of the words were German for dog, chair etc.
Not much help, but it could be a problem getting published.

Andor sounds like a science-fiction name to me.
But if it's used in a book series as popular as The Wheel of Time, then I wouldn't use it.
