Meditating? Now that is interesting. How do you meditate? I've never tried anything like that before (always seemed a bit too freaky), but if you give me some pointers, I'm more than willing to give it ago.
It's really just about clearing your mind. Just sit up (Don't do it lying down, unless you want to fall asleep) and close your eyes. Then breath normally, and concentrate on the feeling of your own breath in your nose. Don't breath through your mouth, it will sound like a jet engine. Then think about nothing. Everytime you start to have a thought, squash it. This is really hard. The idea is to put yourself 'in the zone'. Thinking about your writing is probably the worst thing you can do while you're actually writing it. So now that you're thinking about nothing, you stick your fingers on the keyboard, and let your sub-cortex pump out words. It helps me kick ass at video games too.

And it would probably help if you were already a taoist anyway...

I find the computer is too distracting - what with the internet, games, etc etc...it's the old fashioned way for me, or I never get around to actually writing anything...

Music helps as well, softer stuff like Elliott Smith or Ben Folds is great...

How can you be distracted from something you want to do? If I game of 2-d table tennis can distract you from writing, you can't be too passionate about it.

I could do it anywhere but my hand writing is terrible.

I can't understand why some people need tricks to write.

Not everyone is adept at finding the 'zone'. I think everyone can be, but not without practice. You can't practice the 'zone' if you can't find it at all, and these 'tricks' help some people in that search. I can't just snap into the zone at will - atleast, not when writing. I can when doing a few other things. But I can find the zone with a simple ritual. Why shouldn't I employ this 'trick'?

I'd say some of us really envy people who can honestly say their writing is that natural. For most of us, the writing is always forced. We want to do it, but it's so hard - it's not at all like writing this, in this forum. This just flows, I'm typing right now as fast as I can think, and it all comes out perfect. I wish I could do this when I'm writing fiction, but something is stopping me. Finding out what that thing is, and surmounting it, is the quest of every writer. Until we do get over it, it's easy to be distracted. Because writing is so hard, and table tennis isn't.

I generally hand write mine, mainly because I have a 1 hour time limit on comp, but when I can get on, I type all my writing I've done previously, editing and revising along the way.

Well said, Omnisu. I might try your meditation techniques soon.

Kind of proves my point though, doesn't it? Noone ever says such nice things about my fiction.

I'm generally like that as well, although I do tend to type certain things out.
