People like yelling at other people. It's how the world works. But what about those of us who write for the fun of it more than for publication?

To go along with what some others have said; I like to write 500+ words a day, because I love to write. That doesn't mean I feel like I have to though, it's just like how I try to play certain games every now and then or try to see certain movies. Entertainment not work.

Then it matters even less how many words you write a day. Just write one - as long as it's a nice one!

the old, well-established goal for professional writers used to be 10 pages a day... that meant 10 NEW pages... not rewrites or edits...
i'd say it's still a valid goal, even given the greater ease of committing words to paper that computers provide over the good ol' underwood or smith/corona...
of course, that's if you're writing to sell... if you're just writing for fun, then as mike said, the amount doesn't count...

I'm writing with the hopes of getting something published, but I'm not expecting to make a career out of it. If somehow that magically happened, I'd be able to quit my job and write (or attempt to) 10 pages a day. As it is I'm lucky if I get that on a hot streak.
I like the idea of getting one word a day down. Maybe I'll go out on a limb and shoot for a whole five.

Just make sure you get them in the right order.

Well, yes, a valid goal for those who can afford to spend all day, every day, writing ten pages.
The majority of people have a job, of which pays them before they write the first novel.
