While I generally have no problem with stories starting off slow with lots of description (I mean, come on, I'm a Terry Brooks fan...he hardly, if ever, starts his stories with action), I still prefer the ones that throw you into the action immediately, and for me, it's much easier to write like that. I find it hard for me to start a story if I don't throw them into the action immediately. There's definitely differences between reading styles and writing styles, and that's one of the main ones for me. Generally a book can hook me in fairly quickly if it starts with something mysterious or intriguing as well, and it doesn't necessarily have to be a real fast scene in that regard. Basically, a beginning of a story is satisfactory for me if it leaves you wondering about the things it's describing as opposed to telling you everything outright, ie, an infodump (although honestly, I can usually get through infodumps, as long as they're not too long or too wordy).
