As far as I know, the word mosh comes from "mash", coined by the Bad Brains to describe what their fans did at shows. Vinny Stigma of Agnostic Front recoined it as "MOSH" standing for "march of the skinheads".

I always find it funny to see people who're in relatively mainstream rock boasting about violence or being tough on the dancefloor. The kind of music I'm into...most sensible people are more concerned about their being too much pointless violence, not too little.

Meh.
